The Gala Theatre is situated in a beautiful, purpose-built building on the banks of the river Wear in the heart of this historic city. The venue houses a state-of-the-art modern theatre, spacious and comfortable café-bar, two cinema screens and superb conference facilities.

With a programme of live events attracting some of the country’s leading theatre companies, comedians, bands, musicians and dance performers; and a cinema programme showing the latest blockbusters alongside independent and classic films; Gala offers the very best in entertainment. With a dynamic, experienced new team in place, the venue is going from strength-to-strength, and has recently begun producing its own theatre productions.

The young, talented and war-weary Captain Stanhope is confronted with the fresh face of his past as an old schoolmate joins his platoon. As the offensive looms ever closer, Stanhope must inspire his men to make the ultimate sacrifice for a war he no longer understands and for a cause he no longer remembers. This compelling play is based on R.C. Sherriff's own experience in the trenches with its heroism, humour and inevitable tragedy. All staged within a claustrophobic dugout, audience and actor are witness to a seminal moment in our recent history. Time creeps to a standstill and the soldiers await their orders before racing to a heart wrenching climax as these young men face their Journey’s End.
